Mindy McCain

Fabric and pattern have been Mindy's passion since age 4, when she patiently cut matching holes in her mother’s newly-upholstered chair. She learned the more constructive techniques of sewing, knitting and crochet soon after. Weaving back then was in the form of potholders and grass mats in the yard. As a college student in the early 1970s, Mindy warped her first floor loom and her passion found the perfect outlet. Trained as an art teacher and graphic designer, she is also a self-declared computer geek who has designed and produced web sites for other artists.

After spending 8 years on the art fair circuit in the 1980s, Mindy took her love of design into visual communication and worked as a graphic designer for 18 years before retiring and returning to her handwoven fiber art in the 2000s. She created and sold handwoven evening bags for several years before creating Loominarias handwoven and hand-dyed scarves, which were sold at midwest art fairs, Smithsonian Craft2Wear shows and the Artful Home web site.

The advent of Covid-19 ended her art fair business, so she added handwoven towels to her list to bring color and functional art into the home.

In her Indianapolis home studio, Mindy weaves on a 32-shaft Louet Megado dobby (computerized) loom and an 8-shaft Baby Wolf dobby loom. She also teaches weaving and polymer clay classes at the Indy Art Center.
